BookTube Meets Becoming: A Special Feature with Michelle Obama and John Green

YouTube’s original learning special, appropriately titled “BookTube,” debuted yesterday morning with a roundtable discussion with former First Lady Michelle Obama, author of the New York Times best-seller Becoming. Moderated by fellow best-selling author and Booklist alumnus John Green, the panel also included popular YouTubers Jouelzy, Ariel Bissett, Kat O’Keeffe, Jesse George, and Franchesca Ramsey. If viewers aren’t instantly impressed by the forum’s ability to function while starstruck, they will be hooked by the breadth of subject matter explored given the tight time constraints (just 10 minutes!).

As she discusses everything from human connection and growing up on the South Side of Chicago to the familiar fear of sharing a first draft with the world, Mrs. Obama quickly becomes as familiar to us as our own reflections in the mirror. She challenges us to embrace and celebrate all the ways we as human beings are the same rather than dwelling on the differences that divide us. She notes, “We should start appreciating the diversities of our stories, and understanding that that’s what makes us human, that’s what makes us American, that’s what makes us real.” Armed with words that inspire, the former First Lady’s words are sure to resonate with everyone in one way or another.
