Book Trailer Thursday: ATTUCKS! OSCAR ROBERTSON AND THE BASKETBALL TEAM THAT AWAKENED A CITY

Attucks! Oscar Robertson and the Basketball Team That Awakened a City by Phillip Hoose, will tug at your heartstrings in all the right ways. Written for high-school readers, this is an inspiring and compelling account of Indianapolis’ Crispus Attucks High School varsity basketball team, winners of the Indiana state championship in 1955. With coach Ray Crowe and future NBA great Oscar Robertson, the team helped further integration in their city at the height of the civil rights movement. In the trailer, real newspaper headlines are interspersed with black-and-white pictures of players in good spirits (and in mid-air), but images of the Ku Klux Klan draw attention to the era’s racial unrest. Still, the punctuated text and triumphant piano score ignite a feeling of genuine hope. As Karen Cruze writes in her Booklist review, the book “should appeal to sports fans and those looking for a good book about the civil rights era.”
