Book Trailer Thursday: WHAT CAN A CITIZEN DO?

What makes someone a citizen? That’s what Dave Eggers hopes to explain to young readers in What Can a Citizen Do? (Chronicle). Collaborating once again with illustrator Shawn Harris (Her Right Foot, 2017), Harris’ art acts as a whimsical backdrop to bite-size examples of actionable things people can do in order to become great citizens, from picking up litter and joining a cause to writing a letter and helping change laws. Above all, a citizen should remember that the world is more than you.

In her Booklist review, Jessica Anne Bratt writes, “Readers will be delighted by Harris’ inclusive collages, which vibrantly depict a world of different types of citizens.” The positive message of this book makes it an ideal tool for parents to help introduce the complex topic of citizenship in the present climate to little ones.
