Book Trailer Thursday: MY PLAIN JANE

My Plain Janeout last week from HarperTeen, is the second in the Lady Janies series from Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, and Jodi Meadows. Each title in the series re-imagines and re-tells the story of a famous Jane—first Lady Jane Grey, now Jane Eyre, and eventually Calamity Jane—but with a fun, supernatural twist.

Jane Eyre author Charlotte Brontë appears in the novel as an aspiring writer and Jane’s friend, who thinks Jane’s rare ability to see ghosts will be wasted if she becomes a governess at Thornton Hall. Soon, Jane is in love with Mr. Rochester, and much to Charlotte’s chagrin, has lost all interest in helping their society of supernatural investigators. Could Thornton Hall be hiding a ghost of its own?

This trailer from Epic Reads provides an excellent intro to the concept: the story you think you know, and the one you don’t. Maggie Reagan describes the gothic ghost hunt in her starred Booklist review as “Marvelously self-aware and almost too clever for its own good.” The first title in the series, My Lady Jane, was published in 2016 and also received a starred review, while the third, My Calamity Jane, is expected in 2020.
