2018 Ezra Jack Keats Award Winners

In case you missed it—we sure did!—this year’s Ezra Jack Keats Awards were announced earlier this month. Aimed “to recognize and encourage emerging talent in the field of children’s books,” the award honors one new author and one new illustrator every year.

Derrick Barnes won the New Writer Award for Crown: Ode to a Fresh Cut. This debut, about a trip to the barbershop,  swept the ALA Youth Media Awards earlier this year, earning honors from the Caldecott, Newbery, and Coretta Scott King award committees.

Evan Turk won the New Illustrator Award for Muddy: The Story of Blues Legend Muddy Waters, written by Michael Mahin. In her starred review for Booklist, Ilene Cooper said Mahin’s watercolor, ink, and collage artwork “[explodes] with a neon intensity—the equivalent of a dynamic guitar riff.”
