520 Schools Awarded Subscriptions to Booklist

It’s here! Booklist and the American Association of School Librarians have announced the winners of their Schools in Need Giveaway. Due to an overwhelming interest, 520 schools have been awarded year-long subscriptions to Booklist and Book Links, with full access to Booklist Online. The winners’ first free issue will be the April 1 issue of Booklist, just in time for School Library Month.

As expected, the winners are pleased as punch. Here are just a few of their reactions:

“I am thrilled to have been given such a marvelous resource for our school!! My library club students will be going over the magazines to put together a balanced, inclusive collection to meet our students’ and teachers’ needs. I am hoping to have a $10 library fee collected from each student next school year so we can add to our collection. Your kind and generous gift has truly made my day, and I thank you.”

“Thank you so much for this wonderful resource. We have a staff meeting Monday afternoon, and I can’t wait to let our teaching staff know that we will have Booklist available for them to use and offer suggestions for book purchases that will support the themes in the units they are teaching. I also need to do my end-of-year purchases to finish off this year’s library budget, and can’t wait to read your wonderful reviews to get some exceptional titles to add to our collection.”

“The students and staff at [my library] are devoted bibliophiles, the books on the shelves are well-worn, well-read, and well-loved. Some books could not circulate without constant repair using packing tape. Like many teachers and librarians, I spend my own money on materials and our library budget depends on the kindness (and finances) of occasional donors. Funds are quite tight. I try to read online and at other libraries about books and materials that we might purchase, but to receive a single publication to help me in those efforts would be such a boon. And gift. Our little library, and its patrons, would be grateful.”

The Schools in Need Giveaway, launched in November 2017, asked entrants to share a few sentences explaining how a collection-development tool such as Booklist could help them better serve their communities. To read some of their touching entries, click here.

Booklist and AASL are pleased to recognize the invaluable financial support of Scholastic, a Platinum Sponsor, in making these valuable tools available to school libraries.
