Book Trailer Thursday: WISHTREE

Award-winning children’s author Katherine Applegate is back with a new and timely installment. For many years, Red–a wise, old oak tree–has stood tall over her neighborhood. Every May, an Irish tradition prompts the neighborhood to tie wishes and dreams to Red’s hanging branches. Those who have participated have always been thoughtful to each other and themselves—until a new Muslim family moves into the block and someone scrawls the word leave into the trunk. The tree is left untouched, in silence. As time passes, Red decides enough is enough and attempts to connect the new Muslim girl, Samar, and the neighbor boy, Stephen, in order to banish intolerance and create a safe place for all.

In Wishtree (Feiwel and Friends), Applegate not only forges a beautiful story but cares for the complexity of the current times. As Jennifer Barnes says in her starred Booklist review, “In less capable hands, the subject matter could come across as moralizing, but by introducing a charming cast of critters—opossums, birds, squirrels, and so on—Applegate adds levity, humor, and balance.”
