A Grand Bargain Book Bonanza: Jason Chin’s GRAND CANYON

Cindy & Lynn: We are just back from the ALA Midwinter Meetings, laden with tempting new ARCs to read and award-book displays to build. We visited several bookstores while in Denver over the weekend, including some antique bookstores with fabulous treasures. Denver has so many independent bookstores from which to choose.

While visiting one, we found a large bookcase of bargain books. Faced out on a shelf was Jason Chin’s Grand Canyon, discounted to $7.98. We each decided to buy a copy to add to our personal collections, and we mused aloud that it could win a Sibert or Caldecott Award. Two women near us grabbed the last two copies. Lo and behold, we couldn’t have been happier when Grand Canyon won honor medals  in both of those awards the next day! We are delighted, and there is a bookstore scrambling to restock this title that will be in high demand!

Congratulations to all of the 2018 award winners and the many people who helped those books along to publication. Thank you to the hard-working committee members who gave up much of their personal time last year to read and consider these titles and so many others. And, a big thank you to the booksellers, librarians, and readers everywhere who work to get these books (and the other fine books that don’t have shiny stickers) into the hands of children and teens. You make a difference!
