The Night Before Thanksgiving

BookendsCindy and Lynn: One of our favorite Thanksgiving books is Dav Pilkey’s Thanksgiving spin on the Clement Clarke Moore* poem, “A Visit from St. Nicholas.” ‘Twas the Night Before Thanksgiving (published in 1990, still in print 26 years later) looks at the holiday from the perspective of children on a school field trip to a farm. The children soon realize the imminent fate of the turkeys and, thanks to some quick thinking and waddling action, plan for an alternate holiday feast. Talk about stuffing!

twas-the-night-before-thanksgiving-by-dav-pilkeyIf you’re not familiar with the story, we have a treat for you! Above, a five-minute video of Grace Jones (no, not Grace Jones) reading it to you. Of course, Farmer Mack Nugget’s wife is wearing peace sign earrings.

This year, as ever, we remain grateful for our Bookends readers. Happy Thanksgiving!

*We think Moore’s the author, but maybe not. This Mental Floss article discusses the ongoing debate regarding the real authorship of the famous Christmas poem.
