Mom, It's My First Day of Kindergarten! by Hyewon Yum

Cindy: It’s August. Stores have had back to school supply advertisements running for months now. You know what that means. Yup. Time to at least start thinking about it, and in some areas of the country, students will be fighting lockers and cracking open the new Crayola boxes before this post is published. Mom, It’s My First Day of Kindergarten! (Farrar 2012) will help prepare the reader for the first day of kindergarten. The parent reader, that is. Most books of this type focus on the child’s nervousness. This one addresses those fears in a positive way by focusing on the parent’s fears. Helicopter moms fear not. Your child is ready for kindergarten. Not convinced? Read on.

Each of mom’s worries about the day ahead are met with confidence by the young boy. Did she forget to pack something? Will there be enough time to eat his snack so he’s not hungry? Will he be late? “Don’t worry, Mom. We can run!”

The illustrations mirror the emotions…Mom is a ridiculously small character with a blue worried cast to her face and body while the confident boy looms on the page with full smile and ruddy cheeks and energy to spare. Perspective is used to full advantage. Of course, even the most courageous among us has our moments of doubt…

As a parent, I loved most the final spread. Just when you think you’ve survived one rite of passage, life will throw another one at you.

Lynn:  I’ve had the bitter-sweet experience of sending my twin grandsons off on the school bus to their first day of kindergarten too and I’m here to say it is just as affecting a passage!  (SOB!)  I too liked this sweet little book that addresses everyone’s fears about the first day of school.  I like the small blue figure of Mom in the picture as each fear is addressed and the way Mom gets bigger and pinker but I especially like the depiction of the confident little boy having a moment of blueness himself when he faces the actual door of the classroom.  This reassuring story is a terrific way to talk about those first day fears for everyone in the family!
