A Nerd’s-Eye View of the Book World

Professional Book Nerds Podcast

If you’re one of those people who feels twitchy without a book in your hands, listening to librarians is a great way to feed your addiction until you can get back to reading again.

The Professional Book Nerds podcast is produced by OverDrive, an e-book and audiobook distribution platform. Its hosts, staff librarians Jill Grunenwald and Adam Sockel, bring their enthusiasm for books from the office to the recording studio. With over 100 episodes to date, the podcast features monthly round-ups of the best titles about to hit the shelves, interviews with veteran bestsellers (such as Jodi Picoult, whose past eight books have debuted at #1 of The New York Times Best Sellers list, including this month’s Small Great Things) and rising stars of the book world (such as Marieke Nijkamp, whose This Is Where It Ends was named #1 Young Adult Debut of 2016), and reading recommendations from other career bibliophiles.

Grunenwald and Sockel are upbeat and knowledgeable, and despite the professional in their show’s title, they steer clear of expert-only territory. (They ask every author, “Dogs or cats?”) The show makes more compelling use of its insider access when when the duo dishes about trends in publishing or shares their excitement for books that have yet to be released, especially promising debuts.

The creators bestow attention on the show’s written notes, where each episode is summarized with a satisfying level of detail. Here, the topic of the day is explained and each title, author, or guest mentioned in the episode is helpfully listed for audiences to consult before or after listening.
