Booklist Readers: Dan Kaplan

Our latest Booklist Reader? Dan Kaplan, Periodicals Manager, who can often be spotted zipping around Chicago’s River North neighborhood on his motorcycle.

What do you do when you’re not at Booklist?

1) I love summer in Chicago because I can alternate commuting options between train, bicycle, and motorcycle—the latter two competing for my attention on beautiful days. 2) Obsessing over the day’s news. I cannot look away. 3) Tending a Little Free Library box that I built with my son. It’s been a great way to: play librarian, meet the neighbors, and find new homes for ARCs I pick up at the office. 5) Playing no-longer-popular songs on guitar and mandolin. 6) Checking for things to eat in our garden.

What are you an expert on?

It’s probably a horrible thing to be expert at, but emailing. Sorry, [Your Name Here]! It’s been exciting to contribute to the ALA Publishing department’s development in that area.

What’s your least-favorite thing to do?

It’s definitely following a to-do list. I don’t mind creating them, but when I try to use one, sweat forms and the room starts to spin. I should probably read one of two copies of The Checklist Manifesto: How to Get Things Right, by Atul Gawande, I’ve seen at my house. Maybe a checklist could have prevented that second copy.
