Small-Press Lineup: Down & Out Books

Mystery Month 2017Some of the biggest crime fiction is perpetrated by some of the smallest players. We’re determined to shine the spotlight on them before they break out and wreak havoc across the whole country. Read them—before they publish again!

Criminal Record:

I began my publishing career as an investor and the chief financial officer of Tyrus Books, which was sold to F+W Media. I was determined to stay in the business, and rather than joining another company, I started Down & Out Books in 2011 with the objective of finding, publishing and promoting “lost” authors in the crime fiction genre. Our initial publications included the digital editions of Crimespree Magazine, which we still publish, and the e-books of several well-known authors. It wasn’t long before we began releasing original crime novels, short story collections and anthologies.

shotgun honeyMore recently two imprints, ABC Group Documentation and Shotgun Honey, joined the family, thereby expanding the company’s scope of the business into both literary and short fiction. Our latest venture, Down & Out: The Magazine, premiers later this year.

My greatest satisfaction as a publisher is seeing our authors recognized by their peers with nominations for industry honors, resulting in wins for the Anthony, Shamus, and Thriller Awards, among others. It’s always rewarding and humbling to have been a part of their journey.

Down & Out Books and its imprints’ titles are available from all primary book distributors, and readers can purchase them from major booksellers or from our online bookstore. This year, we are adding over 50 books to our list, and I couldn’t be more excited about our killer line-up.
