MARCH: BOOK THREE Wins 2017 Walter Dean Myers Award

walterWe Need Diverse Books has announced the winner of the Walter Dean Myers Award for Outstanding Children’s Literature–Young Adult Category: March: Book Three, by John Lewis and Andrew Aydin, illustrated by Nate Powell. The committee also recognized three honorees: Watched, by Marina Budhos, If I Was Your Girl, by Meredith Russo, and The Sun Is Also a Star, by Nicola Yoon.

Earlier this year, the March crew won the National Book Award, where Representative Lewis delivered an incredibly moving speech. On March 31, he’ll have the opportunity to make more people cry at the Walter awards ceremony in Washington, D.C.

The Walter Dean Myers Award, now in its second year, has a mission “to honor Myers’ memory and his literary heritage, as well as celebrate diversity in teen literature.” According to the press release, next year’s Walter will include middle-grade books.
