National Book Award Finalists Announced

national-book-award-finalistThe National Book Awards announced their list of finalists this morning. Here’s the shortlist, linked to their Booklist reviews.

 Another Brooklyn, by Jacqueline Woodson

The Association of Small Bombs, by Karan Mahajan

News of the World, by Paulette Jiles

The Throwback Special, by Chris Bachelder*

The Underground Railroad, by Colson Whitehead

*Did anyone else read Chris Bachelder’s U.S.!? It’s a fantastic, fantastically hilarious novel about reanimating Upton Sinclair. You can read an excerpt on the NPR website. If The Throwback Special wins, I’m hoping U.S.! ascends along to the pantheon of classic novels with it, for lo, it is truly bonkers.
