Book Trailer Thursday: The Wonder

Famous for Roomas well as its Oscar-nominated film adaptation, Donoghue continues to display her mastery of suspense, this time in 1859 Ireland. Lib Wright, a nurse, watches over Anna, an 11-year-old who supposedly hasn’t eaten in four months. Since Anna doesn’t seem emaciated, Lib questions what the rest of the pious town deems a religious miracle and—as the trailer suggests—uncovers a possible murder in the process. Vague and cryptic, the text in the trailer hints at the central conflict between Lib and the townspeople. Traditional Irish music underscores the scenic images of the seashore, green fields, and headstones, all cast in a creepy, grayish tone. Be sure to read our starred Booklist review of The Wonder, in which Sarah Johnson says, “Exploring the nature of faith and trust with heartrending intensity, Donoghue’s superb novel will leave few unaffected.”
