Have a Monstrously Great Father’s Day with Monster and Son

BookendsMonster and Son by David LaRochelleCindy: David LaRochelle provides a different take on the familiar loving father / son relationship in his new picture book, Monster & Son, illustrated by Joey Chou. In it, well-known monsters and their offspring share moments of laughter, adventure, play, creativity, sports, and bedtime prep appropriate to each, um. . .breed. Sea monsters go fishing underwater with nets and yetis throw snowballs together. Father dragon’s face turns red from laughing at his son’s jokes as well as from his flames. Mummy Pop wraps up his son in jammies, and the Godzilla dad on the cover says:

Your fearsome yawns won’t frighten me,
I’ll hug you strong and tight.

Chou’s digital art is cheerful and geometric. The monsters are playful and not too scary for the intended audience. This will be a fun Father’s Day read this weekend, but do heed Godzilla’s words and hug your children strong and tight—it’s been a tough week out there.
