The University of Montevallo, alma mater of longtime Booklist contributor and Book Links columnist Pat Scales is honoring her contribution to middle- and high-school librarianship with the creation of the Pat Scales Special Collections Room. The photos above are an artist’s rendering of the library, which will include upwards of 3,000 items, featuring signed first editions of Caldecott and Newbery winners and pop-up books. Throughout her career, Scales has been an advocate for children’s intellectual freedom through her work with organizations such as ALA’s Intellectual Freedom committee, the Freedom to Read Foundation, and the Council of Advisers of the National Coalition Against Censorship. The collection will reflect this contribution with a special emphasis on challenged and banned books. The library is expected to rival other research libraries in the area, mainly the de Grummond Collection at the University of Southern Mississippi and the Baldwin Library at the University of Florida.
