Based in Spring Lake, North Carolina, this group reads mostly authors from their state. They make their reading selections using resources like our own magazine and Random House’s Reader’s Circle. Gloria Nelson, the group’s leader, selects 15 books from which the group then chooses their nine selections for the year.

Tell us a little about your book group.
The Spring Lake Bookbreak Book Club of Spring Lake North Carolina was started in 2005 by the branch manager at that time. The vibe of the group is friendly. We concentrate on North Carolina authors mainly. We read fiction mostly but we read a nonfiction book occasionally. Our group probably isn’t that much different from any other book group.
When, where, and how often do you meet?
We meet on the third Tuesday of each month at the library except in July, August, and December.
How does your group make its reading selections?
I use Booklist recommendations and the Random House website for book clubs to make a list of about 15 books. Then, from there, the book group selects nine from that list.
Which book did your group collectively like the most this past year?
This past year our group most liked Serena, by Ron Rash.
Which is the most divisive book your group has read, and why?
The most divisive book we read was probably One Day, by David Nicholls because we all thought the characters were foolish. Some members didn’t finish reading it for that reason.
How do your group discussions work? Is there one leader or do you have another way of discussing?
We have one leader who leads discussion—that person is me.
What is your group most looking forward to reading this next year?
The book we are most looking forward to reading is This Dark Road to Mercy by Wiley Cash.
What is the best piece of advice you’d give a group that is just getting started?
Read what you think you will like. It may not work out that you like every single choice but you may surprise yourself. The one thing my club members agree on is that even if they think they never would have read the book on their own, they are happy they were introduced to it in our club setting.
Are you looking for new members?
Yes! We are always happy to have new members. You are welcome to contact me at 910-497-3650 ext. 1460 for more information about our group.
