The long-awaited Diversity Baseline Publishing survey, in which Booklist participated, is finally out. You can see it here. We’ve only been privy to a small bit of the effort put forth by the survey’s spearhead, Jason Low of Lee & Low Books, but it’s impressive on a number of levels. Someone had to be the one to ask the uncomfortable question to publishers and review journals, which they, in turn, had to ask of themselves. The numbers were expected by most to be disheartening, and they are; Booklist, like our colleagues, needs to do better, and over the past year we’ve started making what we hope are the first of many strides. It is called, after all, a “baseline” survey: now that we know the line, everyone can use it to measure forward progress—and that’s pretty exciting. Hats off again to Lee & Low for making this happen. It had to happen; it’s happening; let’s keep it happening.
