Book Trailer Thursday: The 2016 Caldecott and Newbery Medalists

Book Trailer Thursday asks two titles to share today’s spotlight, and I don’t think they’ll mind. They are, after all, two of the most talked-about titles for kids, as winners of the 2016 Newbery and Caldecott Medals. The awards were announced just last week, at ALA’s Midwinter meeting in Boston. This blogger happens to think freezing winter days are great days to get to know new books, and hopes that you’ll take the opportunity to get to know these two this season (if you haven’t already!).

Above, Lindsay Mattick, author of the Caldecott-winning Finding Winnie: The True Story of the World’s Most Famous Bear (Little, Brown) with illustrator Sophie Blackall, discusses her writing inspiration. I love the combination of illustrations, photos, and newspaper clippings the trailer shares. You’ll hear from author-illustrator pair Matt de la Pena and Christian Robinson, of Newbery-winning Last Stop on Market Street (Putnam), below. Robinson explains his medium—painted collage—so simply that interested kids might want to give it a shot themselves.
