Bookends Readers’ Choice, 2015: What Is Your Favorite Youth Book?

Cindy and Lynn: Booklist’s 2016 Editors’ Choice lists were announced yesterday in the REaD ALERT newsletter and you can follow this link to the Editors’ Choice Books for Youth, 2015 to see their picks. Like the editors, we like to wait until the very end of the year to announce our list of personal favorites. They are coming soon. We are still reading, reading, reading, and will still end up excluding great books we just didn’t get to soon enough. While you wait for our lists (losing sleep, are you?) we thought we’d start the Bookends Readers’ Choice List. What is your favorite youth title of the year—or your favorite 10 titles? We can still be swayed . . . or bribed with chocolate. Leave us a comment.

Meanwhile, Booklist’s 2015 Top of the List title for adult fiction, Mothers, Tell Your Daughters by Bonnie Jo Campbell, has a book jacket that is already familiar to those of us in the youth-fiction world. We’ve seen this girl in a red truck before, on the cover of Defining Dulcie (2006) by Paul Acampora. Booklist starred that book too, although the reviewer commented on the “unfortunate cover image.” Read the review to learn why. A horizontally flipped identical version of Campbell’s cover was also originally planned for Semiprecious, another 2006 YA title, but was changed to something still very similar. While searching for the images for this post I discovered that author Gail Gauthier wrote about these YA truck covers on her blog back in 2006. Nearly 10 years later and it is stock-photo dejà vu all over again!
