The Clue in the Jewel Box

As told to me by avid mystery fan, Phoebe, age 11:mystery-month-2014

abook3My favorite Nancy Drew mystery is The Clue in the Jewel Box, because it keeps you guessing until the very end.  You get to figure out the mystery yourself, FOR ONCE. Through a series of strange events, Nancy becomes acquainted with Ms. Alexandra, a former queen.  Ms. Alexandra is searching for her only remaining family member, a lost grandson.  At the same time, Nancy becomes involved in the search for a pick pocket.  Nancy offers to take Ms. A’s case even though all she has to go on is a decades-old photograph of the missing grandson. Nancy meets Mr. Francis Baum, whose wallet was stolen by the pick pocket, and he claims to be the missing grandson.  But Nancy feels there is something strange about Baum, who is unpleasant, ill-mannered and boastful.  Who is Baum and why is he acting this way?  Nancy knows there is a connection between her two cases but she can’t figure out what it is.  Can you?

If youabook5 are a fan of the smartly-dressed, Titian-haired sleuth, you might also like the Trixie Belden series.  For something more contemporary, try tween/teen author Kim Harrington’s Sleuth or Dare series featuring best friends Darcy and Norah.  There are three so far and, hopefully, more on the way: Partners in Crime, Framed and Dangerous and Sleepover Stakeout.
