Pretty Word + Ugly Word drills directly into the teenager’s desire to be desired (see: well, too many books to mention), while also isolating the teenager’s anxiety that they are different and unlovable (see: well, too many books to mention).
Naturally, the books falling under this trend are totally different from one another between the two covers. Just like the gown-in-the-breeze jacket trend, titles are largely a marketing tool—perhaps the most effective one the book will ever have.
