#JIAM Audiobooks at ALA

So many audio events in Chicago during the American Library Association’s annual meeting!

Plan to attend the FREE Odyssey Award Celebration Monday, July 1 – 3:30 to 5:30pm, McCormick Place room S106b. Celebrate the spoken word at this event – a must-do during Annual which includes a cocktail reception. Last year’s rock-star celebration included audiobook give-aways for every participant in the standing room-only crowd, so get there early to grab your seat!  The Odyssey Award is presented annually to the best audiobook production for youth and is co-administered by YALSA and ALSC and is sponsored by Booklist magazine. You’re in for a treat – the program features the 2013 winner The Fault in Our Stars, with Honor title narrators Katherine Kellgren (Monstrous Beauty), Nathaniel Parker (Artemis Fowl:  The Last Guardian), and Elliot Hill (Ghost Knight) also taking the stage.

Like to mingle with the Odyssey narrators up-close-and-personal? Stop by the Booklist booth in the McCormick Place Exhibit Hall booth 1817. On Sunday June 30 10:30-11:00AM, I’ll be interviewing both Katherine Kellgren  & Elizabeth Fama, author of Monstrous Beauty. On Sunday June 30, Booklist Media Editor Sue-Ellen Beauregard will interview Kate Rudd, narrator of The Fault in Our Stars. Then on Monday July 1 9:30-10:00am, I’ll interview both Elliot Hill (Ghost Knight) & Nathaniel Parker (Artemis Fowl: The Last Guardian). These interviews will be videotaped, so I hope to have them up here on the blog as quickly as possible.

Curious about just what criteria committee member use when evaluating audiobooks? Stop by an open meeting to hear the discussions during annual. ALSC’s Notable Children’s Recordings (for ages birth-14) meets Saturday, June 29 – 1:00 to 5:30pm and Sunday, June 30- 1:00 to 4:00pm at the Hilton Chicago Lake Huron room. You can check out the discussion list of nominated titles, both audiobooks & music, at this link and learn more about the Notable Children’s Recordings list here. YALSA’s Amazing Audiobooks (ages 12-18) committee meets Sunday, June 30 – 12:00 to 5:30pm at the Hilton Chicago Conference Room 4I. You can learn more about the AA section list here and see Amazing Audiobook’s nomination list as of December here. I’m a member of the 2014 Amazing Audiobooks committee, and we’ve added lots more to the list since that list was posted. Feel free to pop in & out of either of these committee meeting and observe!

Two featured speakers are also audiobook stars – Janis Ian will perform at the Wrap-Up / Rev-Up program Monday, July 1 from 2:00pm – 3:00pm in room s100 of McCormick Place. You can read about Ian’s Booklist Editors’ Choice, multi-award winning audiobook memoir Society’s Child here. Octavia Spencer won an Academy Award for her role in the film version of The Help, but audiobook fans know Spencer originated her role of Minny on the multiple-voice cast audiobook recording. Spencer will be the Closing General Session speaker Tuesday, July 2, also in room s100 of McCormick Place.

Hope to see you in Chicago as we celebrate June is Audiobook Month. Be sure to click here for even MORE audiobook events during ALA Annual #JIAM!
