In Memory of a Friend, Teacher and Mentor is a wonderful project by author Roth that highlights the importance of teachers while raising money for the author’s public library. Download the free short piece here. More details from the Audible website:

In this moving eulogy, Pulitzer Prize- and National Book Award-winning novelist Philip Roth pays tribute to the Newark, New Jersey, high school teacher who helped to shape his ideas and the path of his life.

Roth first met “Doc” Bob Lowenstein as an impressionable teenager at the end of World War II, and the friendship between the two men grew and flourished throughout Roth’s evolution as an accomplished novelist. Roth stayed in touch with his teacher for over half a century, during which time the author came to appreciate his mentor as someone who “resisted the outrage of injustice with extraordinary courage and bravery.”

This personal and very powerful essay is narrated by Roth himself.

Audible will donate $1 for every download of Roth’s eulogy (up to $25,000) to the Newark Public Library, which sustained Newark native Roth for so many years as a young reader and writer.
