Audies Nominees Announced

28 catagories, 5 nominees in each – that’s 140 top audiobooks nominated for this year’s Audies Awards, given by Audio Publishers Association. You can read the complete list of honored narrators and publishers here. The nominees represent the wide range of audio productions, from children to adults, literary fiction to business/educational, multi-voiced drama to the top male & female narrators of the year. Truly a great variety of listens for every taste! Finalists for two special awards, Distinguished Achievement in Production and Audiobook of the Year will be announced in April. I’m always thrilled to serve as an Audies judge and to attend the Audies Gala – and this year’s emcee will make it an affair to remember – I’ll report the results live on May 30th!

From the press release:

The Audio Publishers Association (APA) has announced finalists for its 2013 Audie Awards competition, the only awards program in the United States devoted entirely to honoring spoken word entertainment. Winners will be announced at the Audies Gala on May 30, 2013, at the New-York Historical Society in New York. Writer Daniel Handler, longtime friend and supporter of the audiobook industry will emcee the event.

“It is always an exciting revelation to see which titles have been nominated, especially as the number of titles produced in audio each year is growing so rapidly,” said Michele Cobb, President of the APA. “Yet again, this year’s finalists do not disappoint. With an outstanding host, an amazing list of potential winners and a gorgeous venue, we look forward to once again celebrating excellence in audio publishing.”

Host Daniel Handler is no stranger to audiobooks. At last year’s 12th Annual Audiobook and Author Tea held during Book Expo America, Handler kept the audience laughing for the bulk of the event as he described his illfated decision to replace Tim Curry as the narrator of his popular Lemony Snicket series. “It was a terrible idea,” he said, describing in vivid detail his “stuttering, stammering, lip-smacking” attempt at audio narration. Handler is more optimistic of his emceeing gig at this year’s Audie Award gala “At long last I get to combine my two great loves: audiobooks and hogging the spotlight.” In addition to his mega bestselling A Series of Unfortunate Events series written under the pseudonym Lemony Snicket, Handler is the author of literary novels The Basic Eight, Watch Your Mouth, and Adverbs.

The Audies, sponsored by the Audio Publishers Association (APA), is the premier awards program in the United States recognizing distinction in audiobooks and spoken word entertainment. Through The Audies award competition, publishers are able to enter titles in various categories for recognition of achievement. Finalists are selected and, from that group of finalists, one winner is awarded. Winners will be recognized at the exciting Audies gala in New York City on May 30, 2013.
