Janis Ian Wins Spoken Word Grammy

grammy

Society’s Child: My Autobiography, written & read by Janis Ian  has won the Grammy for the Best Spoken Word Album (Includes Poetry, Audio Books & Storytelling). You can learn more about  recording icon Ian’s experience recording her memoir for Audible / Brilliance Audio in  Ellen Myrick’s “Talking With… Janis Ian” Booklist interview. Visit the Grammy website to replay announcement of the Pre-Telecast catagories for the next month – and hear Janis Ian thank Ellen Myrick,  from the stage! Here’s an interesting fact – Ian was able to sing her signature tunes on the audiobook because she had retained the rights to her songs. If you’ve ever wondered why a narrator speaks lyrics in a book rather than sing, it’s all about procuring the rights. The combination of words and music make Society’s Child such an amazing audiobook. Kudos to Ms. Ian for her recognition and second Grammy – this time for an audiobook! And s bit more here from Ian’s hometown newspaper, the Nashville Tennessean.

And congratulations to the other nominees for Best Spoken Word:

American Grown written & read by Michelle Obama, withVarious Artists. Random House Audio / Books on Tape

Back To Work: Why We Need Smart Government For A Strong Economy - written & read by Bill Clinton. Random House Audio / Books on Tape

Drift: The Unmooring Of American Military – written & read by Rachel Maddow. Random House Audio / Books on Tape
Seriously… I’m Kidding – written & read by Ellen Degeneres. Hachette Audio
