One Special Day by Lola M. Schaefer

Cindy: Bringing a new baby home is always One Special Day (Disney/Hyperion 2012) and preparing the older sibling for the fragile baby’s arrival is an important part of the process. Schaefer and illustrator Jessica Meserve have combined talents to create a special delivery of their own.

Spencer is a boy and you know what that means! He is strong (as a bear), fast (as a horse), loud (as an elephant) and of course wild (as a tiger) among other things. But when the new baby comes home on that one special day he “…was quiet and waiting. And then he was gentle, because, for the first time ever–Spencer was a brother.”

Big sisters will appreciate this story as well and it is a gorgeous lap book, generous in size to accommodate the whole family snuggled together to read it. Meserve’s illustrations of the wild animals and a wild boy at play in the jungle of his own backyard are fabulous. This will be a perfect gift for families who are expecting a new arrival.

Lynn:  Our family is all boys  – so far at least – and I so appreciate the sweet but accurate portrayal of this energetic little boy – so tall, so strong, so wild, so messy, so LOUD!  Little boys will see themselves in Meserve’s funny full-page illustrations.  Their parents and grandparents will see them too!  The message about how to be around a new baby is anything but heavy-handed and it is delivered in a perfect little boy way.  The best thing to be in all of the wild wide world is a brother.  I’m ordering this book today in case our own wild, tall, strong, messy and loud 2-year-old grandson might have need of it in the future!  And Cindy is right – you don’t have to be a boy to appreciate this story.  Wild, strong, messy and loud little girls will love it too.

Cindy: In fact, since writing my part of the post I gifted a three-year-old new big sister with this book. She sat and happily named each animal as the text requires the reader to do and loved the illustrations. She is already becoming a fabulous and gentle big sister.
