As Booklist‘s resident horror expert, it’s not just the Stephen King and Rick Yancey novels I need to devour to keep on top of terrifying trends. Any serious horror fan knows the crossover between books and movies is especially key in this genre–you can hardly be versed in one medium and ignore the other.
With that semi-intellectual excuse in place, let me take this opportunity to officially announce that on October 1 I embarked upon my 3rd Annual 31 Horror Films in 31 Days Challenge.
To recap the rules:
- 31 is a cumulative number. I am under no obligation to watch one film per day. You can’t make me.
- Can I watch a movie I’ve seen before? Sure. Who wouldn’t want to watch Leprechaun: Back 2 tha Hood over and over?
- What constitutes a “movie”? Ah, savvy question. It’s gotta be at least 60 minutes. Anything less would be uncivilized.
- Do I have to finish the movie? Yes. Obviously, this by far the hardest rule to follow.
To recap how I’ve done so far:
2009: MISERABLE FAILURE. Came up three films short. Was scorned by peers. House was egged. Pet fish were poisoned. Etc.
2010: TRIUMPHANT SUCCESS! But just barely. Read the grisly blow-by-blow here.
I’ll be checking back in around November 1. Wish me luck.
