Something Different: Online Short Stories

Is your book group looking for something new and different and, well, cheap? Why not try selecting and discussing some short stories online?

My colleague Jared Mills started a book group called The Seattle Futurians Book Club and for their first meeting they discussed three short stories available online. Kij Johnson’s “Ponies,” “The Other Amazon” by Jenny Davidson and “Amaryllis” by Carrie Vaughn.

This is a great way to draw readers in–give them something freely available online and choose stories that will give them a taste for what the group will be like.

The Guardian online has been publishing original stories by writers for a while now. They have a summer short story special right now featuring stories by Jennifer Egan, David Nicholls, Jon McGregor, Tessa Hadley and more.

Does your group need a palate cleanser or want to discover some new authors? Then explore some short stories online!
