Stocking School Libraries

Colleen Mondor is one of Booklist’s many ardent, expert, and versatile freelance reviewers. I rely on Colleen to cover all kinds of topical nonfiction, with a strong emphasis on books about nature and environmental concerns and Alaska, where she lived for a decade or so after college. Colleen grew up in Florida, not far from Cape Kennedy, and has worked in aviation, which is another subject she covers for us, as well as women’s history, the Middle East, and, well, you get the picture. Colleen also reviews young adult titles — see her Web site, Chasing — and she moderates for the Guys Lit Wire, where she has helped launch a very exciting project, Operation Teen Books Drop.

Working with Powell’s, ALA, and other organizations, Colleen and her colleagues organized an ambitious — and, by all accounts, exuberant — book drive for two Native American school libraries. Read about these libraries, about how sharing the power of books with young people is still one of the best ways to fire up hope, the imagination, and feelings of connection.  Happily, there’s still time to participate.
