Upcoming Masterpieces

I’ve been an avid Masterpiece Theatre (now known as Masterpiece) viewer for longer than I care to admit. I especially like the adaptations of literary classics, and I’m looking forward to the new round of adaptations scheduled for 2010.

First up is Return to Cranford, a sequel to the two-parter starring Judi Dench that aired last year. Next comes a four-hour Emma. Those of you who watched the recent PBS Jane Austen-fest may remember that, while it included new adaptations of several Austen novels, the Emma was one that we first saw back in 1996. The Emma scheduled for January, 2010 is brand new. It will be followed by repeats of Northanger Abbey and Persuasion.

The 39 Steps airs in February, followed by further installments of  the adventures of Bernard Cornwell’s Richard Sharpe. April will bring Andrea Levy’s Small Island, plus a new adaptation of The Diary of Anne Frank.

The complete schedule is available on the Masterpiece Web site.  Book and Film Club discussion guides for some of the titles will also be posted on the site.
