Let's Do Nothing by Tony Fucile

lets-do-nothingCindy: I’ve been lusting after this book, since hearing the title, Let’s Do Nothing (Candlewick, 2009) announced at ALA Midwinter in Denver! Like most adults, my days are over-filled with responsibilities and chores and I long for time to “do nothing.” My teen daughter gave me a quote card this year that says “Doing nothing is doing something.” She’s right. Frankie and Sal, two young boys who have done it all decide that they will do nothing for….ten whole seconds. I could probably fall asleep in that short span, but these two energetic boys have a very hard time “doing nothing.” Fucile’s art is comedic and classic, honed by his years as a Disney and Pixar animator. The large trim size gives the boys plenty of space to do nothing and Fucile utilizes it in a variety of ways providing plenty of visual energy to complement that of the boys. I would love to read this again, but right now I’ve got to go do SOMETHING.

Lynn: Tony Fucile obviously knows little boys! He has captured their wiggly high-energy essence in each laugh-out-loud page. Every person who deals with young children on a regular basis will recognize Frankie’s inability to sit still even for 10 short seconds. Can you say summer story hour? It ‘s not just exhausted grown-ups who love this book though. Our five-year-old focus group not only got the central joke to my surprise but giggled till they fell off the couch at each imaginative scenario. Fucile is a master of page-turn pacing! Breathlessly we paused as Frankie and Sal try to be buildings, statues or redwood trees, then eagerly turned the page for each disastrous result.

Frankie’s signature glasses are a hilarious touch and sharp-eyed readers quickly spot the catastrophe approaching which adds to the fun. Two thumbs way up for this terrific book. And there is an added bonus. Wiggly children will sit as still as they are capable of sitting to read Let’s Do Nothing again and again.

PS: You can watch an animated trailer that Fucile created for the book here or read an interview with him. Or you can do nothing. 😉
