Poet Craig Arnold Missing in Japan

Booklist copyeditor extraordinaire Eloise Kinney passed on an urgent news item: Craig Arnold, a poet (Shells, 1999) and university professor, is missing in Japan (“University Professor Missing for Several Days,” Laramie Boomerang).

According to the university, Assistant Professor Craig Arnold, a faculty member in the Department of English, is in Japan through the U.S.-Japan Friendship Commission’s Creative Artists Exchange Fellowship. He was visiting the volcano on the island of Kuchinoerabu-jima for a book he is writing about world volcanoes.

Japanese government officials, who have been very cooperative, have agreed to extend the search by three days, meaning the search will continue through Sunday, which is Sunday morning Mountain Standard Time given the time difference.

Arnold has been blogging about his trip at Volcano Pilgrim; his last update was April 26. Friends and family are hoping to find more searchers and have started a blog, Find Craig Arnold, that refers people to the Facebook group of the same name.
