How Do You Say "Avi"?

This spring the Booklist youth staff has been busy making videos for Booklist Online, and you can see Ann Brashares, Kate DiCamillo, and Ingrid Law anytime you like on Likely Stories.

Now check out Booklist reviewer Kay Weisman’s conversation with the amazingly versatile Avi, whose books range from the best-selling Poppy series to the Newbery Medal winner Crispin to classics like Nothing but the Truth and The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle.

But admit it, aren’t you just a little unsure of how to pronounce his name? And where the heck did it come from, anyway? Well, wonder no longer! (And by the way, if you ever want to know how to say “Scieszka” or “Wiesner,” check out TeachingBooks’ nifty pronunciation guide.)

Laura Tillotson was the editor of Book Links magazine from 2006 to 2011 and Booklist's Books for Youth editorial director from 2008 to 2011. Before joining Booklist she was an editor at Cricket and Spider magazines.

Love the author interviews! Keep them coming please….

  2. Enjoy Avi’s work and share his work with young readers. If it’s any comfort Avi, my siblings called me Lane as a child. Thank you for the
You-tube interview post. I like this format.
Have a great day, read great books, write great books.

This was a great opportunity to briefly “meet” an author I would otherwise not have the chance to encounter within the scope of my normal work day.

So glad to hear that you like our videos. We plan to do some more filming at the upcoming ALA Annual Conference. Wish us luck!
