Tomorrow, March 19, is a day of celebration. It’s Certified Nurses Day, for one. It’s also the birthday of Earl Warren (the judge), William Bradford (the pilgrim), and Wyatt Earp (the gunslinger). But more important to the children’s literature world, tomorrow marks the publication of Laurie Halse Anderson’s new book Wintergirls, one of the hottest titles of the spring season.
Anderson is the author of the immensely successful YA novel Speak, about sexual assault, and a new edition of that book, complete with “bonus material,” is also publishing tomorrow. One of the bonuses is Anderson’s poem “Listen,” which was inspired by the many responses she’s received about the book. The “Speak Up about Speak” Web site features a video of Anderson reading “Listen” aloud.
So while celebrating the certified nurses, the judge, the pilgrim, and the gunslinger, I’m also taking time to recognize the achievements of this talented writer. I hope the sequel to Chains will be coming along next.
