Advertising Copywriters Take Note

Usually I don’t pick on self-published authors–they already have enough of an uphill battle without me piling it on. But, of the many many many press releases I receive on a daily basis, this one just made me . . . well, I’ll say “smile.” Under the subject heading “AUTHOR RETIREMENT CLEARANCE SALE!!!” I received this irresistible come-on:

The author of the following books has retired and wishes to clear his garage of books that he has written about Latin America.
Now, buy these books at a greatly reduced price.
Supplies are very limited so order now. Only a few hundred books remain of each title!!!

There are many things that make me want to buy books, chief among them the desire to help an author make it easier to park his car.

About the Author:

Keir Graff is Executive Editor of Booklist Publications and the author of five books. His most recent is the middle-grade novel, The Other Felix (2011). Follow him on Twitter at @Booklist_Keir.

Only a few HUNDRED copies of each title? What exactly is “very limited” about that level of supply? I suppose if B&N suddenly wanted a thousand copies of each there would indeed be a supply constraint, but I’m guessing that individual buyers will be able to buy copies for the indefinite future, and probably forever.
