Dial A for Awards

I’m not the first to make the observation that the annual ALA Youth Media Awards feel like the Oscars. (If only there were a red carpet and all the authors were there to clench their jaws and clap robotically when they didn’t win.) And you know that part in the Oscars when that accounting dude comes out and tells us about all the behind-the-scenes secrecy of the ballots? It’s the part when you get up for more popcorn because the behind-the-scenes stuff is boring when Angelina and Tom and Leonardo are all out there clenching their pretty jaws.

But the behind-the-scenes stuff at the Youth Media Awards isn’t boring at all, as this video from Greg Landgraf at AL Focus shows us. The looks on the faces of those making the congratulatory phone calls to the winners are the picture of barely controlled glee, and the reactions of the stunned authors are pretty darn heartwarming. Plus, if you’ve ever wondered what Neil Gaiman sounds like when he’s rudely woken up (and who among us hasn’t?), then this video is just the ticket.
