After much praise, a spot on our 2008 Editors’ Choice List, and a National Book Award nomination, Laurie Halse Anderson’s Chains won the Scott O’Dell award. She gets $5,000 in addition to bragging rights.
Founder Scott O’Dell, best known as author of Island of the Blue Dolphins, wanted to give an award for young adult historical fiction set in the New World (US, Canada, or Central or South America). The requirements were so specific no award was given for two years after it was established. Another fun fact, Booklist’s own Hazel Rochman chairs the award. We’re everywhere.
More information on the Scott O’Dell award and previous winners can be found at the Scott O’Dell website.
